Camera unit (3, 3′) having a protective element (4, 4′) for recording images of an external region for a motor vehicle (1), which camera unit is connected to a display apparatus, which is arranged within the motor vehicle (1), via a controller, wherein the camera unit (3, 3′) is arranged within a recess (5, 5′), which is provided in the motor vehicle (1), such that it is covered by means of the protective element (4, 4′) in an inactive operating position, and the camera unit (3, 3′) and/or the protective element (4, 4′) can be moved into an enable position, which serves as the active operating position for recording images of the external region, by a drive element after activation of a first operating element, in particular by the activation of the reverse gear, which is in the form of the first operating element, of the motor vehicle (1), and at least a second operating element (6, 6′) is provided, wherein the camera unit (3, 3′) and/or the protective element (4, 4′) can be moved into the enable position which is suitable for recording images of the external region by the drive element after activation of the second operating element (6, 6′), wherein the second operating element (6, 6′) can be operated by the user only outside the motor vehicle (1).
