Process for preparing multimetal cyanide compounds, which comprises the steps a) reaction of the aqueous solution of a metal salt of the general formula (I) M.sup.1.sub.gX.sub.n (I) With the aqueous solution of a cyanometalate compound of the general formula (II) M.sup.3.sub.r[M.sup.2(CN).sub.b].sub.d, (II), If appropriate in the presence of organic ligands, organic additives and/or surface-active agents, to form a multimetal cyanide compound of the general formula (III) M.sup.1.sub.a[M.sub.2(CN).sub.b].sub.d.fM.sup.1.sub.jX.sub.k.h(H.su- b.2O).eL.zP (III) b) reaction of the multimetal cyanide compound of the general formula (III) with a salt of the general formula (IV) M.sup.4.sub.sY.sub.t (IV) which is different from general formula (II) where M.sup.1, M.sup.2, M.sup.3, M.sup.4, X, L, P, Y, g, n, r, b, d, a, f, j, k, h, e, z, s, and t are defined in the specification.
