The invention relates to a compound of general formula (I): where X=0 or 1, Z=O, S or CH.sub.2, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 independently=OH or OY, where Y=a protecting group, OR.sub.3, where R.sub.3=a monosaccharide or disaccharide group, A.sub.1-CH.sub.2--N.sup.+(CH.sub.3).sub.3, X', where X=halogen, A.sub.1=an amide (NHC(O)) or ester (OC(C)) bond, OPO(OM).sub.2, where M=an alkyli or alkyli earth metal, OP(O)O.sup.---O(CH.sub.2).sub.2--N.sup.+(CH.sub.3).sub.3, A.sub.2-(PEG.sub.X1-A.sub.3).sub.n-R.sub.4, where n=0 or 1, PEG.sub.X1=a polyethyleneglycol of molecular weight X.sub.1, where X.sub.1 being less than or equal to 5,000 daltons, A.sub.2 and A.sub.3 independently=a ether (O), ester (OC(O)), amide (NHC(O)), urea (NHC(O)NH), thiourea (NHC(S)NH), or thioether (S) bond R.sub.4=a directing agent. ##STR00001##
