4-Substituted coumarin compounds having the general formula of ##STR00001## where R is H, CHO, OCH.sub.3, X, NO.sub.2, an alkyl having C.sub.1-10, --OCH.sub.2O--, an aryl being mono- or poly-substituted with CN or COOCH.sub.3 with the aryl being a phenyl, naphthyl, or azaryl, or a coumarin group ##STR00002## that is substituted with R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, with R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 being H, an alkyl having C.sub.1-10, X, NO.sub.2, CN, OCH.sub.3, COOCH.sub.3 or OR.sup.5, R.sup.5 being H or an alkyl having C.sub.1-10, and X being a halogen.
