The present invention relates to processes for the preparation of a compound of the formula ##STR00001## wherein W is nitrogen or --CR.sup.3; R.sup.1 is halogen, haloalkyl, haloalkoxy, R.sup.4S(O).sub.n-- or --SF.sub.5; R.sup.2 is hydrogen or halogen; R.sup.3 is halogen; R.sup.4 is alkyl or haloalkyl; and n is 0, 1 or 2; and processes for using a compound of the formula (I) in the synthesis of compounds of the formula ##STR00002##
