An intumescent polymer composition includes a matrix polymer, an acid catalyst source, a nitrogen source and an ionic phyllosilicate synergist having substantial cationic exchange capacity. Particularly preferred ionic phyllosilicates are montmorillonoids whereas pentaerythritol phosphate is a preferred acid catalyst source: ##STR1##
