Abstract

Compounds of formula (I) ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is phenyl substituted by one or more halogen atoms, naphthyl and naphthyl substituted by one or more halogen atoms; R.sup.2 is --NH.sub.2 and --NHC(.dbd.O)R.sup.a ; R.sup.3 is --NR.sup.b R.sup.c, --NHC(.dbd.O)R.sup.a or hydrogen; R.sup.4 is hydrogen, --C.sub.1-4 alkyl, --CN, --CH.sub.2 OH, --CH.sub.2 OR.sup.d, --CH.sub.2 S(O).sub.x R.sup.d and --C.sub.1-4 alkyl substituted by one or more halogen atoms in which R.sup.a represents C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.3-7 cycloalkyl, and R.sup.b and R.sup.c, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl, or together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a 6-membered nitrogen containing heterocycle, which heterocycle can be further substituted with one or more C.sub.1-4 alkyl; R.sup.d is C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkyl substituted by one or more halogen atoms; x is an integer zero, one or two; and salts, solvates and prodrugs thereof, provided that R.sup.1 does not represent: ##STR2## when R.sup.2 is --NH.sub.2, and both R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are hydrogen. The compounds are useful as analgesics, anticonvulsants, for treating bipolar disorder and as neuroprotectants.
