There is provided a liquid crystalline compound having a high voltage holding ratio which has a very small degree of temperature dependence, a low threshold voltage which has a very small degree of temperature dependence, a high .DELTA.n, and excellent miscibility with other liquid crystal materials at low temperature; a liquid crystal composition; and a liquid crystal display element, and the liquid crystalline compound is a substituted benzene derivative represented by general formula (1), ##STR1## where, R represents a straight chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms in which each of optional and nonadjacent methylene groups (--CH.sub.2 --) may be substituted by an oxygen atom; X represents a halogen atom, --CF.sub.3, --CF.sub.2 H, --CFH.sub.2, --OCF.sub.3 or --OCF.sub.2 H; each of Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 independently represents --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --, --(CH.sub.2).sub.4 --, --CH.sub.2 O--, --OCH.sub.2 -- or a covalent bond, but Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 are not covalent bonds simultaneously; each of Y.sub.1, Y.sub.2, Y.sub.3, Y.sub.4, Y.sub.5, and Y.sub.6 independently represents H or F, but at least one of Y.sub.1, Y.sub.2, Y.sub.3, and Y.sub.4 represents F.
