There are described benzoyl compounds of the formula (I), their preparation and their use as herbicides and plant growth regulators. ##STR1## In this formula (I), R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are various radicals, X is an alkylene chain which may contain a hetero atom and Het is a heterocycle or heteroaromatic ring.
