Abstract
There is disclosed an improved process for the preparation of a compound of the formula I ##STR1## wherein n is 0 or 1, R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl or --CH.sub.2 SR.sub.3, R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.9 phenylalkyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.9 -phenylalkyl substituted on the phenyl radical by from 1 to 3 C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups; or --CH.sub.2 SR.sub.3, R.sub.3 is C.sub.6 -C.sub.18 alkyl, phenyl or benzyl, R.sub.4 is hydrogen or methyl, R.sub.5 is hydrogen or methyl, with the proviso that R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are not simultaneously methyl, by reacting a compound of the formula II ##STR2## wherein n, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are as previously defined, R.sub.11 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl; and R.sub.12 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.9 phenylalkyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.9 phenylalkyl substituted on the phenyl radical by from 1 to 3 C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups; with formaldehyde or a compound that liberates formaldehyde under the reaction conditions and with at least one compound of the formula III R.sub.3 SH (III) wherein R.sub.3 is as previously defined, in the presence of a base, said base being mono- or dimethylamine or mono- or diethylamine, which process comprises treating afterwards the reaction product with a reducing agent.
