A process for the preparation of a compound of formula I ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 represents an amine protecting group wherein a compound of formula II ##STR2## in which R.sub.1 is as defined above is reduced by a metal hydride in the presence of an inorganic salt in the presence of a diluent.
