A friction material contains a fibrous reinforcement, a binder, and a fricton modifier. The binder content of the friction material on the back plate side is made to be larger than the binder content of the friction material on the friction surface side. The fibrous reinforcement content of the friction material on the back plate side is made to be smaller than the fibrous reinforcement content of the friction material on the friction surface side.
