Intermediates for the synthesis of camptothecin of the formula II ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.1 is --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 NR.sub.1 R.sub.2, where R.sub.1 is an amino protecting group and R.sub.2 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkyl, hydroxyethyl or acetoxyethyl group, and of the formula III ##STR2## wherein: n is 1 or 2; R.sub.3 is hydrogen or --OR.sub.4, where R.sub.4 is hydrogen, --COR.sub.5, --CONHR.sub.6 or CH.sub.2 OR.sub.7, where R.sub.5 is methyl or --CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.3, R.sub.6 is isopropyl, phenyl or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 Cl, and R.sub.7 is methyl, ethyl or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.3 ; with the proviso that when n is 2, R3 is not hydrogen.
