Abstract

The extension of the physical addressable memory space of a computer system is achieved by a secondary storage subsystem controller which intercepts requests to non-existent physical random access memory. The requests are translated into requests for data stored within a lower-cost secondary storage subsystem. The processor accesses data and programs on the secondary storage subsystem in the same manner as data and programs are accessed in system memory. The secondary storage subsystem can simultaneously function as a conventional storage medium.
