Techniques for the detection of disease of the central nervous system, pacularly of bovine spongiform encephalopathy or 'mad cow disease', scrapie and related states, are provided based upon the detection of a factor present in the urine of affected animals or humans. That factor is defined in terms of elution data from an ion exchange column and by electrochemical characteristics.
