Methine compounds of formulas (I), (II) and (III) are disclosed: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.3, R.sub.5 and R.sub.5a each represents an alkyl group, an aryl group, or a heterocyclic group, and the remaining symbols are defined in the specification. A silver halide light-sensitive material containing at least one of the methine compounds is also disclosed.
