Disclosed is a crystalline compound and a method for forming the compound having a chemical composition expressed, in terms of molar ratios, by the formula: M.n[R(COOH).sub.x ] wherein M is aluminum hydroxide, n is the number of moles of organic material reacted with a mole of M, R is an organic functional group having carboxylic acid attached thereto, and x is equal to or greater than 2.
