Herbicidal benzylpyrimidine and benzyltriazine derivatives of the formula: ##STR1## and salts thereof, where: X is --CH.dbd. or --N.dbd.; R.sup.1 represents a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group; R.sup.2 represents hydrogen, or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aralkyl group; R.sup.3 represents cyano or a group --COOR or --CONRR', where R and R', which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aralkyl; and R.sup.4 and R.sup.5, which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, amino or halogen, processes for their preparation, and compositions containing them.
