A method for making A cylindrical surface which is substantially directionally balanced hydrodynamically when rotated in either direction and can be used as a contacting surface in engagement with a radial lip oil seal. The microabrasions produced during preparation of the surface are balanced between clockwise micro-abrasions and counter-clockwise micro-abrasions.
