1-(2-Trifluoromethoxy-phenylsulphonyl)-3-heteroaryl-(thio)urea herbicides of the formula ##STR1## in which Q represents oxygen or sulphur, R.sup.1 represents hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or benzyl, R.sup.2 represents hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -halogenoalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -halogenoalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -halogenoalkylthio, amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-amino, X represents nitrogen or a --CH-- grouping, Y represents nitrogen or a --CR.sup.3 -- grouping, wherein R.sup.3 represents hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkyl)-carbonyl or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy)-carbonyl, and Z represents nitrogen or a --CR.sup.4 -- grouping, wherein R.sup.4 represents hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-amino.
