Abstract
Compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are alkyl or aryl groups, A, B, C and D are non-reactive substituents or two are joined to form an additional ring, and Z is either of the formula Z': ##STR2## wherein R.sup.4 is H, lower alkyl or a cation; or a -6-oxotetrahydropyran-2-yl ring of the formula Z': ##STR3## e.g. 4-hydroxy-6-{2-[2-(methyldiphenylsilyl)phenyl]ethenyl]ethyenyl}-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one, (trans, trans). The compounds inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis and are useful as anti-atherosclerotic agents.
