Abstract

An inert coating of calcium pyrophosphate in finely-divided form is provided on the inner surface of the envelope of a fluorescent sunlamp underneath the phosphor layer to reduce the emission of undesirable short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation (190 nm to 260 nm region). The relative densities of the phosphor layer and undercoating of calcium pyrophosphate are so correlated that the ratio of short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation to erythemal radiation is maintained below a prescribed limit. The particles of calcium pyrophosphate are also larger than about 1 micron and are thus adapted to selectively absorb the undesirable short-wavelength radiations and provide an integral UV-filtering means for the sunlamp.
