A method for the preparation of .alpha.-L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methylester, which method comprises reacting an ester of L-phenylalanine with N and .alpha.-carboxyl-protected L-aspartic acid, to produce an .alpha.-L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methylester without racemization and isomer formation and in high yields.
