An axle assembly for an electric work vehicle includes an electric drive system including an electric motor and a first axle hub. Furthermore, the axle assembly includes a first axle shaft having a first end and a second end, with the first end of the first axle shaft coupled to the electric motor. Additionally, the axle assembly includes a first gear train coupled between the second end of the first axle shaft and the first axle hub.
