A display device that displays an image, including a light source; a plurality of display panels arranged in a stacked manner; a wide area smoothing unit; a narrow area smoothing unit; and a blending unit. The plurality of display panels include a first panel and a second panel disposed between the light source and the first panel, the wide area smoothing unit outputs a wide area smoothing value obtained by performing a smoothing processing on a luminance information value of a target area including a target pixel and surrounding pixels of the target pixel in an input image, the narrow area smoothing unit outputs a narrow area smoothing value obtained by performing a smoothing processing on a luminance information value of a target area that includes the target pixel and surrounding pixels of the target pixel and is smaller than the target area of the wide area smoothing unit.
