A card reader (100) for reading a smart card (200), the card reader (100) comprising:
- an antenna (160) for making a wireless connection with a smart card; anda card detector, for determining a location of the smart card (200) relative to the antenna (160); andwherein the card reader (100) has a processor (180) configured to provide communication with the smart card and to allow or provide a first wireless communication when the card (200) is determined to be at a first location (110) of the card reader and to provide a second wireless communication when the card is determined to be at a second, different, location (120) of the card reader (100).
