The disclosure relates to a radiation shielding element, which comprises at least one core that shields from ionizing radiation and is surrounded by at least one protective layer, said protective layer consisting of at least one outer layer and at least one indicator layer. The disclosure also relates to an X-ray inspection unit having a shielding device at the entrance (E) and/or exit (A) of radiation tunnel, said radiation shielding device consisting of a radiation shielding curtain which comprises a plurality of the claimed radiation shielding elements. The disclosure finally relates to methods for assuring a minimum lead equivalence of a radiation shielding element, particularly for an X-ray inspection unit.
