Abstract

A lighting system for illuminating an area. The lighting system includes at least one luminaire disposed in an area, wherein the luminaire includes a housing having a light exit aperture at a distal end, a first light source configured to emit visible light, and a second light source configured to emit ultraviolet light. The second light source is disposed in the housing between the first light source and the light exit aperture and allows at least some of the visible light emitted by the first light source to pass therethrough. The lighting system also includes a controller operatively coupled to the second light source of the at least one luminaire, and at least one sensor operatively coupled to the controller. In some embodiments, the controller receives one or more signals from the at least one sensor indicating detection of occupancy of the area, and in response illuminate the second light source.
