Abstract

A process for the catalytic decomposition of nitrous oxide N2O in a gas mixture obtained in the preparation of nitric acid by catalytic oxidation of ammonia, in a reactor which contains in this order in the flow direction a noble metal gauze catalyst and a heat exchanger, over a catalyst for the decomposition of N2O which is installed between the noble metal gauze catalyst and the heat exchanger so that the hot gas mixture obtained from the catalytic oxidation of ammonia is brought into contact with the catalyst for the decomposition of N2O before subsequent cooling, characterized in that the catalyst is in the form of a star-shaped body having six lobes.
