A light emitting element (100) includes a light transmissive substrate (110), a light emitting layer arranged on a side opposite to a light extraction side based on the light transmissive substrate (110), and a diffraction grating layer (120) arranged on a side opposite to the light extraction side based on the light transmissive substrate (110). The diffraction grating layer (120) includes a light transmissive base portion (121), and a plurality of structures (122) which are periodically arranged in a direction intersecting with the light transmissive substrate (110) to thereby form a diffraction grating (123) in the base portion (121).
