A system and method for optical coherence tomography includes an interferometer and a sensor head which emits electromagnetic radiation toward an object to be examined and electromagnetic radiation reflected by the object is fed back into the interferometer; a positioning element configured to position the sensor head relative to the object to be examined and including a support which is provided at the object and on which the sensor head can be placed, a first area that is substantially transmissive to the radiation emitted by the interferometer and reflected by the object, and a second area having a transmittance to the radiation emitted by the interferometer and/or reflected by the object that is different from the transmittance of the first area; an image generator configured to generate one or more images on the basis of the electromagnetic radiation reflected by the object and/or by the positioning element; a display device configured to display the generated images; and a controller configured to control the generation and display of the images in such a manner that the sensor head can be brought into a desired position on the positioning element on the basis of the generated and displayed images.
