A method recuperates unused optical radiation energy of an optical machining apparatus having at least one light source, in particular a laser light source or a light source having a number of LEDs. The method includes operating the at least one light source and generating electromagnetic radiation, subjecting at least one workpiece to the electromagnetic radiation in order to machine the workpiece, and capturing at least a part of the electromagnetic radiation not used for machining the at least one workpiece in a beam trap device of at least one recuperation apparatus. At least a part of the radiation energy of the electromagnetic radiation captured by the beam trap device of the at least one recuperation apparatus is converted into electrical energy. A recuperation apparatus also recuperates unused electromagnetic radiation energy of an optical machining apparatus as does an optical machining apparatus.
