Abstract
A process for multilayer coating of substrates includes applying a base coat layer of a water-based color- and/or special effect-imparting base coat composition onto a substrate, applying a clear coat layer of a transparent clear coat composition onto the base coat layer, and curing the clear coat layer. The base coat composition contains a water-dilutable polyurethane hybrid binder, obtained by polymerization of a polyurethane macromonomer, containing a lateral and/or terminal vinyl group, in the presence of an unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the polyurethane macromonomer, a curing agent, and a pigment. The polyurethane macromonomer is based on a polyhydroxyl compound. The polyhydroxyl compound comprises at least about 50% by weight of at least one polycarbonate polyol, which is liquid at 20° C., the % by weight based on the total amount of the polyhydroxyl compound.
