A portable, self-contained, irradiation apparatus for photodynamic treatment of the vulva and/or the anus which comprises: a treatment surface 2 capable of conforming to the area of the vulva and/or anus to be treated, an illumination system 4 for directing light onto a treatment area of the vulva and/or anus and a power source 18 for the illumination system; wherein the illumination system is arranged to provide light at fluence rates of 50 mW/cm2 or below.
