Abstract
A seaming assembly (10) configured to seam a can end (14) onto a can body (18) to form a seamed container (20) is disclosed. The seaming assembly (10) includes a lifter assembly (27), a seaming chuck (28), and a knockout pad (30). The lifter assembly (27) is configured to lift a can body (18), and includes a spring (166). The seaming chuck (28) includes a surface (58) that is configured to contact a portion of the can end (14) during seaming. The knockout pad (30) is movable relative to the seaming chuck (28), and is configured to locate the can end prior to seaming. The spring (166) is preloaded to provide a force between 301bf and 901bf to the can body (18) when the lifter assembly (27) has lifted the can body (18) and the can end (14) has contacted the seaming chuck (28). The force provided to the can body (18) may increase to between 901bf and 1501bf after the spring (166) has been compressed.
