An ethylene terephthalate type polyester resin for forming containers, having an intrinsic viscosity in a range of 0.80 to 0.90 dL/g, containing copolymerizable components other than the ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid in an amount of less than 1.5 mol %, containing monohydroxyethyl terephthalate and bishydroxyethyl terephthalate in a total amount of less than 0.005% by weight, and having a heat of fusion of not more than 50 J/g and a crystallinity of less than 60%.
