Abstract
A method of dispensing a product item is disclosed. The product item has packaging. On the packaging are a number of coded data portions. Each coded data portion encodes an identity of the product item and a part of a signature. A sensing device senses one or more coded data portions and generate indicating data indicative of: the identity of the product item; a signature part; and a signature part identifier. A processor receiving the indicating data from the sensing device then determines a determined signature part and authenticates the product item by comparing the received signature part and the determined signature part. Further, a criterion for dispensing the product item is determined and the product item is caused to be dispensed based on the criterion being satisfied.
