A lock or latch having a latch bolt movable linearly between latching and unlatching positions; a rotatable operator; a drive member movable linearly between first second positions in a direction transverse to the latch bolt's direction of movement, wherein movement of the drive member from the first position to the second position can be caused by rotation of the operating means, and a contact part is associated with the latch bolt and can move linearly between non-retracting and retracting positions in a direction parallel to the latch bolt's direction of movement.
