A method (250) of measuring activity over a VOIP call is disclosed. The method (250) includes: detecting (260) whether a voice over internet protocol call includes a comfort noise payload format; and counting (270) the number of comfort noise packets transmitted during a voice over internet protocol call. Advantageously, this can provide usage information, quality of transmission information, billing information and other useful information.
