The invention relates to an inorganic ion exchange adsorbent for removing toxic trace elements from water, comprising a sorbent comprising sol-gel generated double hydrous oxide of metal. In particular, for the metal a M2+ and M3+ (or M4+) metal is selected, preferably a metal from the group consisting of Al, Fe(III), Cr(III), Zr(IV), Fe(II), Zn, Mg, Mn(II), Co, Ni is selected. The invention further relates to a method of manufacturing an inorganic ion exchange adsorbent and a method of purifying water.
