Abstract
An item checkout device with antenna which minimizes orientation sensitivity of RFID labels. An example checkout device includes a scale, a weigh plate on the scale, a radio frequency identification label reader antenna including a first portion within the weigh plate and a second portion below the first portion, and a radio frequency identification label reader coupled to the second portion. The second portion includes a conductive layer with substantially orthogonal slots having radiating edges, a drive circuit for driving the slots to radiate a circularly polarized electromagnetic field, and a non-conductive layer separating the conductive layer from the drive circuit.
