oxide, wherein M is at least one transition metal, M′ is at least one metal other than a transition metal, Z is at least one non-metal, coefficients i, m, m′, z, o, n and f are selected in such a way that the complex oxide is electrically neutral, with i=0, m>0, z=0, m′=0, o>0, n=0 and f=0. At least part of the complex oxide particle or particulate aggregate surface is coated with a carbon layer bound by chemical bonds and/or physical bonds to the carbon. The complex oxide has formula; the carbon has covalently bonded functional groups GF.
