The present invention relates to a method for preparing lamellar nanoparticles, the method including: a) mixing a laminated material with a blowing agent chosen from polyols to obtain an expanded laminated material, b) reacting the expanded laminated material with a grafting agent in the presence of water and an acid, said agent corresponding to the general formula R.sub.aXY.sub.4-a in which R represents a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon-based radical incorporating 1 to 40 carbon atoms, the R groups possibly being identical or different; X represents a silicon, zirconium or titanium atom; Y is an alkoxy group containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or a halogen; and a is equal to 1, 2 or 3; and c) recovering at least one lamellar nanoparticle.
