Apparatus for lysing adipose tissue and/or cellulite comprising: at least one transducer controllable to transmit ultrasound; and an adapter configured to couple ultrasound transmitted by the at least one transducer to a region of a patient's skin comprising and/or overlaying a layer of adipose tissue and/or cellulite; wherein the adapter orients the transmitted ultrasound relative to the layer of adipose tissue and/or cellulite so that it tends to propagate along a region of the layer.
