Abstract
A method for producing a biphenyltetracarboxylic acid is to perform dimerization of a bromophthalate under the presence of a palladium catalyst and at least one reducing agent selected from the group consisting of saccharides and aliphatic monoalcohols having at least two carbon atoms. By this production method, since a side reaction is suppressed, a biphenyltetracarboxylic acid useful as a starting material for a polyimide resin having superior heat resistance and mechanical properties can be obtained in higher yield than ever.
