A polymer-carbon nanomaterial composite. The composite includes a polymer matrix; and plasma-modified carbon nanomaterials having surface functional groups attached thereto, wherein the carbon nanomaterial is selected from carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, carbon nanoparticles, carbon black, nanodiamond, fullerenes, or combinations thereof.
