Described is the use of a combination of an oxocarboxylic acid with metal ions, organic bases or polymers substantive for keratin material for combating, suppressing or eliminating odors of the hair of skin. Preferred oxocarboxylic acids are those of general formula R--C(.dbd.O)--A--CO.sub.2H wherein R stands for hydrogen or a monovalent organic group and A strands for a divalent organic group or for a single bond. A preferred combination is zinc levulinate which can be used, in particular, for combating the unpleasant odors of sulfur compounds, for example after permanent wave treatments.
