Abstract
The present invention relates to copolymers prepared by copolymerization in at least two stages, wherein, in one stage (A) at least one (co)polymer is prepared from a monomer or a mixture of comonomers comprising (a1) from 80 to 100% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (a2) from 0 to 20% by weight of at least one C.sub.1-C.sub.22-alkyl ester of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (a3) from 0 to 10% by weight of at least one further ethylenically unsaturated compound,data in % by weight being based on the total amount of comonomers of the relevant stage,and the (co)polymer thus obtained is reacted in a subsequent stage (B) with a further comonomer or a further mixture of comonomers comprising (b1) from 0 to 30% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (b2) from 70 to 100% by weight of at least one C.sub.1-C.sub.22-alkyl ester of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (b3) from 0 to 10% by weight of at least one further ethylenically unsaturated compound,data in % by weight being based on the total amount of comonomers of the relevant further stage.
