Abstract
The invention provides a device for protecting electrical installations against surges caused in particular by a lightning strike, the device comprising: first and second electrodes (2, 3) between which an electric arc (5) may be generated in a striking area (6); a device (7) for splitting the electric arc (5) situated at a distance from the striking area (6); focusing means (9) adapted to define a divergent space (10) for guiding the electric arc (5) from the striking area (6) towards the splitter device (7), said divergent space (10) having an aperture angle (.alpha.); the device being characterized in that the focusing means (9) are shaped so that the aperture angle (.alpha.) of the divergent space (10) increases, on average, between the striking area (6) and the splitter device (7).
