Abstract
Leathers are produced by a process wherein pelts, pickled pelts or semifinished products are treated with at least one polymer which is obtainable by copolymerizing (A) at least one ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid of 3 to 8 carbon atoms or at least one anhydride derived from a mono- or dicarboxylic acid of 3 to 8 carbon atoms, (B) at least one vinylaromatic compound, (C) at least one alkoxylated unsaturated ether of the formula I (D) optionally further monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, where, in formula 1, the variables are defined as follows: R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are identical or different and are selected from C.sub.1-C.sub.4-alkyl and hydrogen; R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are in each case identical or different and are selected from C.sub.1-C.sub.4-alkyl and hydrogen; R.sup.6 is selected from hydrogen, SO.sub.3M, PO.sub.3M.sub.2, C.sub.1-C.sub.30-alkyl, CO--H (formyl), CO--C.sub.1-C.sub.20-alkyl and CO--C.sub.6-C.sub.14-aryl, M is an alkali metal or NH.sub.4.sup.+ or CH.sub.3, n is an integer from 3 to 100 and y is an integer from 0 to 10.
